Molto bello! Tommy DeVito has revived the Giants' season in 2023
The undrafted rookie has used his swagger to bring the Giants back into the playoff hunt
He’s a sensation in the NFL.
Italian Americans have a reputation for being a bit feisty and just getting after things. There’s a player in the NFL now who has used his Italian swagger to take the league by storm in just a short amount of time. Say “ciao” to Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito.
The man they now call “Tommy Cutlets” has brought the Giants back from the dead. After knocking off the Green Bay Packers on Monday Night Football in Week 14, the Giants have now won three straight with DeVito and are right back in the playoff picture. Even at 5-8, the Giants are now just one game back in what has become a very interesting race in the NFC Wild Card standings. Five teams are tied at 6-7 for the final spot with two others at 5-8.
NFC Wild Card Standings through Week 14
Eagles 10-3
Vikings 7-6
Packers 6-7
Rams 6-7
Seahawks 6-7
Falcons 6-7
Saints 6-7
Giants 5-8
Bears 5-8
So, how has DeVito used his swagger to save the Giants’ season and give them hope? Let’s dive in a little bit.
DeVito gets his first taste of NFL action
DeVito, an undrafted rookie who played at Syracuse and Illinois, began the season as the No. 3 quarterback behind Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor. No one could have thought DeVito would even sniff the field as a rookie, but injuries to both Jones and Taylor initially thrust DeVito into action in Week 8 against the New York Jets. Jones returned for Week 9 against the Las Vegas Raiders but would get hurt again, putting DeVito back in. DeVito threw for 175 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
The Giants named DeVito the starting quarterback for Week 10 against the Dallas Cowboys. Dallas was just too overpowering yet again, winning 49-17 after a 40-0 Week 1 win. But in Week 11, things started to click for Mr. Cutlets.
The Giants took on a Washington Commanders team they had defeated 14-7 on October 22. Washington made DeVito look like a seasoned vet in just his second start. The rookie completed 18 of 26 passes for 246 yards with three touchdowns and a 137.7 quarterback rating as New York completed the season sweep of Washington with a 31-19 win.
