Georgia-to-Alabama Transfer WR Jermaine Burton Scouting Report
The transfer portol has come alive over the past few years as players continue to get more power and say about where they go and play in their college careers. Jermaine Burton played his first two years of college ball at the University of Georgia and was an under-utilized asset. His freshmen season he brought in 27 catches for 404 yards and three touchdowns and this past year he was able to improve his yardage on less catches finishing with 497 yards with five touchdowns. He improved his efficiency and needed to at Georgia with less opportunities.
Alabama saw Jameson Williams and John Metchie drafted in April and then Agiye Hall, who was the #3 ranked WR recruit in 2021, entered the transfer portol the same month. Burton needed a new place to allow himself the opportunity to show what he could do, so the 6-foot, 200 lb Junior transferred to Alabama to play with Heisman-winning QB Bryce Young at Alabama in a passing attack that should fully be capable of showing the deep threat ability that Burton possesses. Let’s take a look at some clips and talk about his strengths and things to improve.
Strengths:
-Downfield threat
-Hip sink on in-breakers
-contested catches
-Stem manipulation
-Acceleration
Areas to improve upon:
-Handwork
-Creating after the catch
-varying speeds
-Needs work vs press
-Creating natural separation
Burton has some work to do taking the next step, but a change of scenery for Jameson Williams transferring from Ohio State did the trick for him at Alabama last year. While Burton doesn’t have the same game-breaking speed, he is a deep threat with ball skills down the field and has the makings of a good route runner at Alabama. If he can work on using his hands to help against man coverage and generating a bit more YAC in his game, he will vault up draft boards across the country. Having one of the top QBs in the country now throwing him the football is going to help him out too. Get a bit more physical, use the hip sink in more areas of his game, and learn to read corner tendencies and I think he’s got a great chance to have a breakout junior season. Burton is a name to watch this coming college football season, keep your eyes open.
